Zakopane is set to host the upcoming Junior World Skiing Championships. The capital of the Polish Tatra mountains will be replacing another Polish city - Szczyrk, which was unable to hold this event due to unfavorable weather conditions.
'Zakopane has the snow and the facilities. We should have given this more thought, as it's a big challenge. Such a large event with such little time to prepare the facilities,' said Apoloniusz Tajner, president of the Polish Skiing Association.
'We've already talked about it. The decision is affirmative. Zakopane has taken on the organization of the JWSC.' The mayor of Zakopane, Janusz Majcher, Andrzej Stolecki of the organizational committee in Szczyrk, Lech Nadarkiewicz of the Tatra Skiing Association and Andrzej Kozak actively participated in the negotiations.
'It was a difficult decision and I'm aware of the great responsibility. I would like it very much, if after these surely successful championships Zakopane would create the lasting impression, that it's possible to organize any kind of event at such short notice there, regardless of the weather conditions. I deeply believe that this will be the case,' said Janusz Majcher.
The competitions in Zakopane will start on February 25th and end on March 2nd. The rivalry will take place in two disciplines: ski jumping and nordic combined, whereas the cross-country events are likely to commence in the Norwegian town of Ostrelund.
