Thomas Morgenstern triumphed at the second competition in Sapporo, which was a challenge to many because of the difficult weather conditions. The Austrian showed the two longest jumps in both rounds - 135 and 139 meters, fighting off the likes of Janne Happonen (128,5 and 134 m) and Anders Bardal (127 and 131,5 m).
After a broken off qualification round and a starting time change, the event had finally begun. Unfortunately, it consisted of much waiting and rather short jumps. The first decent jumps in the inaugural competition round were presented by Takanobu Okabe and Robert Kranjec (123,5 m). Janne Happonen, Anders Bardal and Taku Takeuchi were able to surpass the 126 meter mark (128,5 m, 127 m and 126 m respectively), but only 3 jumpers were able to go past 130 - Bjoern Einar Romoeren, Denis Kornilov and the above mentioned Thomas Morgenstern achieved just that.
In the second round, some jumpers were able to compensate for their shortcoming in the first - like Tom Hilde, who went from 30th to 12th place thanks to a 128,5 m jump, or Michael Neumayer, who jumped a meter further and was thus able to finish the event at 6th place. Janne Happonen confirmed his good disposition with another good jump, this time to 134 meters, but not even this was enough to shake Morgenstern, who was in a class of his own with 139 glorious meters to certify yet another victory.
After today's triumph, Morgenstern's advantage over Janne Ahonen has grown to 610 points, whereas Tom Hilde is keeping the Finn and Gregor Schlierenzauer on their toes as he's only losing 20 points to Ahonen.
