Interview with Kroisos vs fans

Interview by: fans

And here they are! The long awaited, one and only, fan-interview with the Finnish super-blast-(to become) in the music business hailing from the snowy hills with the remarkable sounds of the ski jumping venues echoing the spurring songs of four. Four at their own life-path bridge table: Ville Kantee the lead singer and guitarist, Jarkko Saapunki the guitarist and the vivid uncaptivated spirit of the band, Jussi Hautamäki the bassist and Olli Happonen the drummer.

With their sounds so far from the hackneyed dullness one might witness in the European trends of nowadays, Kroisos give their listeners a fresh punch straight to the inner chords of perception. These four guys are a living proof that sportspeople can not only be successful in their discipline but show some great deal of talent and versatility in many other undertakings at the same time.

The interview was firstly designed for the Polish readers only, but with its huge success among Poland's fans, there came the idea to share the interview with the non-Polish-speakers as well. The text will be divided into three parts from which the first one is in front of your eyes now. Hoping that the interview brings a whole lot of interesting and new details concerning this 'band of the ski jumping world invadors' I wish you an enjoyable read.

paulka_ammannka: How on Earth did you guys get the idea of playing together in the rock-band?

Jussi: It's a satans evil plan to make everybody deaf...
Jake: I think Jussi answered pretty well. In fact I've been playing guitar since I was 7 so it is kind of natural to form a band.
Opa:I'm just a by-stander! suddenly I found myself playing in the band…but I like it…
Ville:Hmm... Same kind of people have found each other. In this case, 4 idiots!

Monia_=): What does KROISOS mean and whose idea was it to give such a name to your band?

Jussi: Jake's idea... Kroisos means filthy rich
Jake: Kroisos was founded in 1997, but then we soon changed the name into VIERAILEVA TÄHTI. Kroisos is just universal word but it doesn't really sound that good.
Opa: Nothing more to add…
Ville: I have played in many bands and this one has the most stupid name...
Jake: But this is the best band you've ever played in.
Villei: Yeah, and what it tells about my musical skills?

lilinka: When will you finally come to Poland for a concert-tour? Who writes the lyrics to your songs? Where does the inspiration come from: the world of ski jumping or your private lives?

Ville: I hope we are able to play in Poland during 2007. My lyrics come from my life. At the moment: no life, no lyrics!
Jake: When we'll be in Poland? We're ready to come. Most of "bad-English" lyrics are written by me or Ville and I have had inspiration from ski jumping life once and it was a weak inspiration (VT:sinivalkoiset taistelee);)
Opa: I think it's more of financial matter when we're to play in Poland, I agree that we would be ready for coming there. What comes to the lyrics, I don't even know how the most of the lyrics go…;)

martula: Are you popular in Finland/Kuopio as a band? What do you normally do in your spare time? If you didn't pursue your careers in ski jumping what else would you do with your lives or what plans do you have for the future?

Ville: I don't like to go out anymore here in Kuopio... Everytime same problem. People are screaming: "hey, there goes the singer of that awesome band called Kroisos!!!". ...I've been paranoid about it lately... I'll work few more years as a serviceman and then start coaching.
Jussi: We are not popular in Finland/Kuopio. I'm trying to find a job...
Jake: No one knows us anywhere. I don't have any sparetime besides ski jumping, family and music and I love it like this.
Opa: My life nowadays is pretty full of working and family… No time to golf anymore (but still trying to find time to play with the guys..)

Anula: Who's idea was it for the Everyday Is Like Monday clip? When will you record some new songs?

Jake: It was Eurosport yeah. New demos are coming soon heheh. I've been reserving studio for making new single. We'll record that in June.
Ville: Eurosport watts, have mission to make people look like idiots. However, we've been making idiots from ourselves since 1996 so I guess they were a bit late. New songs coming soon! also coming soon some t-shirts with the text: "coming soon!"

anula: Do you know any Polish words or phrases? Or Polish music? Are Finns such non-talkers always or only for strangers? How would you describe yourselves? (each of you please) and what do you like/dislike in other people?

Jake: Polish is really out of my repertuar. It has so many consonants that huhuh. If you've checked Finnish A-team's social skills, please don't compare them with the whole Finnish nation. And we do have indidviduals that like to speak there in the A-team as well! Me as a person I am open seem-to-be-social heterosexual who likes mostly his own company heheh.
Ville: I know some Polish words but I'm afraid to say those coz I might swallow my tongue;) Bit too many consonants for me too. I've heard some Polish music and I liked it... What was the name of that band... Yep, it was Myslovitz. My name is Ville, I'm from Finland and I love ski jumping and music! I'm a simple man with simple dreams.
Opa: Nothing to say in Polish… Not much to say in Finnish either. I have to be very social during the day so I rather shut up whenever I can…
Jussi: I am an old stupidass ski jumper who doesn't know when to quit...

Krofsko: Is it worth it to marry a Finnish guy? Why?

Jussi: No.
Jake: I hope my wife still thinks so about me. But is it worth? I disagree with Jussi. Finnish female is the strongest woman on earth and that has made us Finnish men good servants for ladies ;).
Opa: Most of the band are married, so I guess you should try…
Jake: Yeah, there are still ladies that can be fooled, Opa.
Ville: I'm the one and only one who's not married... Btw. Nice question;)

Koffi7: What bands are your inspirations when it comes to song-writing?

Ville: I listen to music from rap to black metal. At the moment my stereo plays Coheed & Cambria. I get my inspiration from good music, not from any band.
Jake: Inspiration comes from good music. I listen to hard rock and metal mostly.

Ania7: If you could turn back the time what would you change in your lives? What do you think about Poland and Polish people?

Ville: I wouldn't change anything. I have made many stupid things but those experiences have made me hopefully better and stronger person. I like Polish people. You are so polite. Haven't seen your country that much but I hope to see it more someday. And I really would like to play there!
Jake: I would only change some dark days that almost ruined my life but I guess you learn from these days too.
Opa: same here..
Jussi: Going to high school was a big mistake and maybe the whole ski jumping 'career'. I should have study a profession to myself instead of graduating from high school which I didn't benefit anything.

Monia_=): In what situations do you happen to sing (for ex. under shower or so)? How often do you meet up for rehearsals? Do you like Polish food?

Ville: I don't know that much about Polish food. I've only eaten at the sport hotel in Zakopane. Maybe I have a chance to learn more in the future. Band sessions? Not often.
Jussi: Not often enough.
Jake: We train periodically. I would like to play more but Olli is living in other town so that sets some challenges.
Opa: …but we try to practice 2 or 3 times /month…and unfortunately, I do sing in the shower..
Ville: Yep, Olli sings at shower! My favorite Olli's shower song is "Myrsky repii puita, taivas salamoi...". I sing everywhere: shower, car, at work etc.

OwcaKlaudia: How was the gig on the 13th March? Has any funny situation ever happened to you during the concerts?

Jussi: Jake snapped his guitar string in the middle of 'Everyday is like Monday' solo..
Jake: On the last gig with VT 1998 I forgot to play whole song cause we had like 20 ppl in the audience so I guess motivation was not there… 13th gig was just kick off to our asses. For me at least it gave more motivation to perform, hopefully sometimes out of Kuopio too…
Opa: I enjoyed it a lot..
Ville: Last gig in Kuopio was ok. I was sick but anyways it was nice to play live. We've had so many funny things in our gig's that we should write book about those!

werka: Do you listen to/like any Finnish bands, your country-rock seems to be very popular nowadays? What is your favourite movie?

Jussi: Apulanta, Kotiteollisuus, Viikate, Mokoma etc. movie: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas..
Opa: Apulanta, Kotiteollisuus,
Jake: Bloodpit, Reckless Love are nice. Silence of Lambs is my favourite movie.
Ville: I like also these same band as Jussi... Then I like Sara, 51 Koodia, Major Label, Disco Ensemble, Verenpisara, Stam1na. Etc. There're so many good bands here. My favorite movie: Good, Bad and Ugly. Coz of the music.

Klaudia: Why Finnish team never comes to SGP competitions in Zakopane? You're all expected here with impatience, maybe you could play a concert as well..

Jussi: It's surprisingly difficult to travel to Zakopane...
Jake: They will be there this year.
Ville: Yep, this year we have team there...and I really hope that we could play there also.
Jussi: Me too. I'll jump there too…

Magadan: Whose posters did you have in your room when you were teenagers?

Jussi: Kurt Cobain/Nirvana
Jake: Mama wouldn't let me have.
Opa: I wasn't allowed to..
Ville: I had Sabrina, Crocodile Dundee, McGyver, Matti Nykänen and David Hasselhof. Yep, you can laugh now...
Jake: I would've had the same ones too.

Walther: What do you think about Matti Nykänen's vocal skills?

Jussi: As good as mine ;)
Jake: Developed a lot. We've discussed about making Germany/Poland Tour with Matti and his band…wouldn't that be… humouristic?
Opa: Better than mine…
Ville: Matti is the god!

Mayken: Can any of you tell me where has the Finnish team gone? Is it a longer trip to nowhere or just a one-seasonal vacation? We really miss Finnish athletes at the top of the ranks..

Jussi: In Finnish - "suomen mäkijoukkue on laulettu suohon"..
Jake: Why do you talk about whole Finnish team? In my Puijo point of view Matti was better this year (from 11th to 9th place overall), Arttu was 460 times better than last year. Just count points Janne A. took less this year than last year and you'll find pretty much the reason why it seems like you say.
Ville: I think we had tiny succes hangover.
Jake: Yeah, it was not tiny one…

Crazy21: What are the lessons you've learnt from ski jumping?

Jussi: That I'm a moron...
Jake: Jussi, you sound so ”positive” that I should give a hard chat for you. I've learnt that ski jumping is only ski jumping not whole life though life style it is…
Ville: For me ski jumping is life...
Opa: Sometimes you fall high…

Basiek: I've heard that Finnish cuisine is not too flattering for human's tongue, what are your favourite dishes and which of Finnish 'delices' you wouldn't touch even for a second?

Jake: In every culture you have good food and bad food. I wouldn't eat Finnish Easter thing called mämmi. It is black and it is like clue and it smells bad. I like smashed potatoes with fried reindeer slices…
Opa: Mämmi …damn…you should see how it looks like…haha
Ville: I think that Italian dictator Berlusconi made our food culture famous. Here is a good advice for everyone: if you come to Finland, don't try any traditional food!

Monia: Would you take your sons to the hill and encourage them to jump and/or become professional athletes if they seemed good and liked it?

Jussi: Ski jumping never but maybe pro tennis, golf or ice-hockey player.
Jake: I let them do what they find most motivating, I also feel that they are overdosed with ski jumping… And from my selfish point of view I see career in other sports more attractive; I am already 12 hours in skijumping environment/a day so I'd rather go to ice hall or other with my kids just to get some other influences myself too. My sons have tried jumping cause they wanted few times.
Opa: Already did, but he wasn't interested…lucky me…
Ville: I let the family guys answer to this question..
Jake: But you do have children all around so don’t ya want them to jump?
Ville: Would be too expensive to provide equipments for them.

Magia:D: Will it ever be possible to see you guys playing live in Poland? For example in Zakopane. Would it be possible to buy your album there?

Jussi: It would be nice to play there if only somebody would take us to there...
Jake: Yes, and we will give out cds as soon as we hear there are on demand.
Ville: We'll play there someday... And we'd like to have distribution deal or even record deal in there but that is just dreams, we know.

Magia:D: Has it ever happened to you that you forgot the lyrics while singing on stage and you had to make up the following text?

Ville: Well... This story is true. In last Kuopio gig I didn't have lyrics for two songs' verses, and I made them up when I was singing...

Magia:D: What are the things each of you dislikes in other band-members?

Jake: Opa is living too far. Jussi likes too heavy music and Vili just sucks.
Opa: guys living too far away...
Ville: Olli is living too far,Jarkko has adhd and Jussi doesn't have sansamp effect on his bass.

Aune: Do you treat playing in the band seriously? Is it your alternative plan for a successful future or do you do it for fun only?

Jussi: We cannot be taken seriously...
Jake: Music is for fun only BUT if we were good enough I could see myself in stages and record studios more often.
Ville: For me this is just for fun.

Aune: What do you think, you guys will be doing 10 years from now?

Jussi: "homedad"
Jake: Rich fat bastardo sitting in Spain with tanned skin, looking after first grandchild, drinking expensive champagne heheh.
Ville: I put sun oil on that rich bastardo's skin and after that i clean his swimming pool:)
Jake: I am proud of you Vili; you know your position clearly!

Timantti: Do you like Salmiakki? Do you often see reindeers walking around the town?

Jake: I am eating salmiakki at the moment.
Ville: I'm not suprised that the fat bastardo is eating something.
Jake: hehheh. Do you see elephants walking in Varsova streets? No you don’t.
Ville: Yeah, and reindeers don't walk free in here! We just have sex with them and then we put those hairyballs back to closet.
Jake: Just speak for yourself Ville! No wonder you don’t have long lasting relationships with your manners.
Opa: I like salmiakki too. I only see reindeers when I drive over them…
Jussi: Reindeers live in Lapland...

Lintunia: What was the craziest thing you've ever done?

Jussi: Having a kid..
Jake: I bought new RX-8 sportscar last week..
Opa: Has something to do with alcohol..
Ville: My trip to Prague...

Lintunia: If you were to compare yourselves to animals which would you be?
Jussi: A bug.
Jake: Pink panther.
Opa: A pink bug.
Ville: Then I'm a big bug panther pink dog in the fog mixed with frog.. ohhh I'm so funny...:(

Aune: When will you release Crap Collection vol.2?

Jake: Never but we'll start recording our first album in June. Working title is "Coming soon".

Beja: Have you ever considered taking part in Finnish version of the well-known 'dance with the stars' tv show? Can you dance at all?

Jussi: I can dance as well as an elephant, I really look like a moron on a dance floor so I don't dance...
Jake: Tough guys don't dance…
Opa: Never ever dance!!!
Ville: And I think you have to be a celebrity to get to that show, which we are not. I'm a razorblade of the dance floor so don't come close or u might get hurt...

Magia:D: Are you supersticious?

Jake: Not even a bit.
Opa: nah…
Ville: I am. And it's very annoying sometimes.

Megic: Do you think that there will be any freshbie in Finnish team to conquer the World Cup next season?

Jake: I think we will have 1-2 freshbies and the old ones will also fresh up a bit…like Jussi for example..

to be continued..
